Storage Has Become Décor in Today’s Housing

There is a growing demand for pretty storage due to pop culture. Here are some of the things home buyers want.

These days, TV shows and social media channels emphasize organization, and home buyers are taking notice.

Storage and decoration are both necessary to them. They should designate places for all their belongings and aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-use living spaces with built-ins.

Storage is no longer just about form or function, experts say. It also contributes significantly to its style.

Meritage Homes’ Amber Shay, national vice president of design studios, says consumers increasingly focus on organization and storage for specific needs. Decorative storage containers in fun colors and designs are being used a lot lately to match the décor scheme.

How else is storage on-trend these days? These are the home buyer’s demands.

1. Open shelving

A popular way for homeowners to transform storage into a statement is to install open shelves.

Homebuilder Taylor Morrison’s national director of design and model experience, Lee Crowder, says open shelving isn’t just a trend in the kitchen; it’s now a trend in the bathroom.

The benefit is that there is less cost involved than adding a built-in cabinet,” she adds. Having easy-to-use items stacked on shelves or in clear and organized containers is also a trend.

Additionally, custom open closet shelving, drawers, and cubbies in various sizes are increasingly in demand. In addition to displaying shoes, purses, accessories, and more, homeowners can organize their clothing conveniently and stylistically with these.

Anthony Carrino, vice president at Welcome Homes, says consumers want customized storage and maximizing vertical height. Since closet depths are limited, consumers are taking advantage of the entire wall more and more.”

2. Roomy Pantries

There is also a significant demand for oversized pantries. Bulk buying has been prevalent since the pandemic’s beginning (maybe those toilet paper shortages contributed).

Additionally, they need more display space to organize and display their goods beautifully.

Crowder says the pantry has become one of the most popular places in the home for organizing and maximizing storage. Instagram or TikTok are filled with people color-coding their snacks and ensuring all grains and pasta are in clear containers.”

It’s also common to have a large working pantry accommodating appliances, trash cans, and a prep area.

MBA Builders’ lead designer Kyle Arruda says buyers want a separate pantry (in or off the kitchen) that stores food and smaller appliances and items that aren’t used frequently. This will ensure their kitchen counters are decluttered.

3. Drop Zone Storage

Many buyers consider drop zones, also known as mudrooms, to be essential storage areas. A well-organized entryway can ensure a cleaner space and prevent stray shoes, coats, backpacks, and bags from piling up.

“The sight of everyday items scattered around can be a little frustrating,” Crowder says. “It is easier to find things while leaving the house when there is a place to store daily essentials (usually the garage) at the entrance.

Carrino emphasizes that these rooms must have a variety of storage options. A storage bench, hook, cubby, shoe rack, shelf, and more can be incorporated into this storage.

“Shoe storage and benches have become an imperative part and main design element in the mudroom,” Carrino says. “For most households, it will serve as a sitting area for putting on and removing shoes, as well as hooks for coats and cubbies. Many households include a corresponding number of coat hooks or cubbies according to the number of members in their household.”
