What Are the Most Popular Kitchen Designs for 2022?

With today’s home buyers, grays, double sinks, and one-tone cabinets have become unfashionable. There is an increase in color, contrast, space, and storage requests from builders and designers.

Additionally, touchless fixtures and upgraded appliances are making kitchens smarter and easier to use.

Six builders, architects, designers, and other professionals shared their thoughts on the latest kitchen trends. Their responses are below.

1. Contrast and Variety

According to Empire Kitchen & Bath designer Mark Cayen, mixing materials is a popular trend. The different finishes on metals, the different styles of cabinet doors, and the different countertops all lend to the overall effect of the space.”

Color contrast is also essential. Despite many saying that all-white kitchens are out, mixing white with dark or bold hues is different.

According to Lee Crowder, national director of design and model experience at Taylor Morrison, white kitchens are still in vogue. Still, they are paired with additional colors to feel fresh and new. It may be white cabinets with black-matte appliances or hardware complemented by a painted kitchen island in rich, bold color. The secret to making your kitchen feel special is to use white or light colors with excellent contrast.”

The HGTV show “Kitchen Cousins” star Anthony Carrino, vice president of design at Welcome Homes, also suggests varied cabinet colors.

“Multiple cabinet colors are trendy, including an island in a different color and a galley or L-shaped area in the kitchen,” says Carrino.

2. Big Islands

Large islands that can double as dining areas are the No. 2 emerging kitchen trend for 2022, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). This theme is expected to dominate over the next three years, according to 63% of pros.

Several factors contribute to this, including work-from-home flexibility, which means homeowners spend more time in the kitchen than before the pandemic. A compact floor plan is also crucial, says Alan Scales, an architect with KTGY.

As land prices rise, scales say that floor plans are being designed efficiently, which maximizes space while allowing homeowners to live largely. A larger dine-in island has replaced the dining room in many affordable and attainably priced homes.

3. Next-Level Appliances and Sinks

Homeowners and buyers are investing heavily in appliances these days. The demand for multi-dishwashers or ovens with air-frying and dehydrating options is growing, while others are requesting app- and voice-controlled appliances. Crowder states that we see an increase in the demand for a home with good appliances. Because homebuyers are cooking more at home, they need a product that enhances their lifestyle and looks great.”

The demand for touchless and multipurpose sinks is also high, most of which are single-bowl sinks.

The multi-functionality of the kitchen is very popular at the moment, she adds. In recent years, single-bowl kitchen sinks have become more popular thanks to additions like integrated drying racks and cutting boards. Having a multipurpose sink means storing fewer extra tools and gadgets.”

4. Better Storage

Storage is also on consumers’ minds. Some people want a bigger pantry. It is not new for large homes to have bulk pantries, but we are also seeing them in townhomes. This is a great place to store one’s large Instant Pot or air fryer when you stock up on shelf-stable food products. The pandemic taught people about stocking up on shelf-stable food and home supplies.”

For others, hidden storage is more of a concern. The NKBA report shows that 42% of designers anticipate this as a significant trend.

It has become increasingly popular to organize all kitchen appliances and instruments under one roof, says Anna Karp, co-founder, and CEO of Bolster. This would have been considered a luxury five years ago, but today, cleaner-looking kitchens are becoming more popular.”
